Water-colour drawing of Shiva and Shakti (Parvati) by Syamesvari Radhe Devi Dasi.
Lord Shiva is a very unique personality. He is known as the destroyer and the third member of the Trimurti, which also includes Brahma (the creator) and Vishnu (the preserver). Shiva is often depicted with ash smeared on his body, a crescent moon on his forehead, and the river Ganga flowing from his hair. He is associated with meditation, asceticism, and the destruction of ignorance and ego.
nimna-gānāṁ yathā gaṅgā
devānām acyuto yathā
vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ
purāṇānām idam tathā
Just as the Gaṅgā is the greatest of all rivers, Lord Acyuta the supreme among deities and Lord Śambhu (Śiva) the greatest of Vaiṣṇavas, so Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the greatest of all Purāṇas. - Srimad Bhagavatam 12.13.16
Shakti (Parvati) is the divine feminine energy and represents the creative power of the universe. Parvati, also known as Uma or Gauri, is one of the primary forms of Shakti and is the consort of Lord Shiva. Parvati is depicted as a goddess of beauty, love, and devotion. She is often portrayed with Shiva, symbolizing the harmonious union of the male and female energies in the cosmos.
Together, Shiva and Shakti represent the divine couple whose union symbolises the interconnectedness and complementarity of masculine and feminine energies in the universe. Their divine love story and cosmic union are celebrated in various Vedic scriptures, festivals, and devotional practices, exemplifying the essence of harmony, balance, and spiritual awakening.
